Check What You Can and Can’t Power Coat before Taking Action

Do you have aging and corroded objects lying around your house, begging for a fresh start? Or maybe you don’t have the resources or time to replace the fridge your grandmother gave you, even though it’s deteriorating faster than your sunburn? If so, powder coating could be the soothing aloe vera solution you’ve been seeking.

Powder coating is a cost-effective and durable method that delivers a sleek and attractive appearance to your belongings. Nevertheless, it is crucial to apply it to appropriate surfaces to guarantee maximum durability and effortless upkeep. If it’s administered incorrectly or on unsuitable surfaces, you could wind up spending more than you planned and eventually confronting additional issues such as flaking paint.

Fortunately, you need not concern yourself with any of those issues since we will outline all the necessary dos and don’ts concerning what can and cannot undergo powder coating.

Materials that Can be Powder Coated

Metal is the most frequently powder coated material because of its capacity to retain an electrostatic charge, enabling the powder to adhere more effectively to the grounded metal through their electrostatic attraction, quite the romance! Aluminium, stainless steel, brass, mild steel, galvanized and electroplated steel are all instances of metals that can undergo powder coating.

In addition to metal, several other materials can receive a powder coat finish. Glass, wood, and carbon fiber are among the materials that can undergo powder coating. However, they must first undergo heating at a specific curing temperature to enable the powder to adhere efficiently. Certain plastic materials such as polyetherimide, polyphenylene, and glass-filled nylon can also withstand the powder coating process effectively, but there are still some that cannot.

Materials that Should NOT be Powder Coated

Although several items can undergo powder coating, there are still some we do not recommend. Any materials that cannot endure the heat of an oven used for powder coating, which is around 220 degrees Celsius, SHOULD NOT be powder coated. Therefore, we do not recommend finishing materials such as rubber and certain plastics (PS, ABS, PC), unlike the ones mentioned earlier, as they will melt and deform during the heating process.

If you are uncertain about whether your desired item can undergo powder coating, it is always prudent to contact an expert. Fortunately, our welcoming staff at China-Static are at your service!
